[Thinlinc-announce] ThinLinc 1.3.0 released

ThinLinc 1.3.0 är nu klar. De stora nyheterna i denna versionen är:

 - stöd för att nå klientens lokala enheter från servern 
 - stöd för andra Linuxdistributioner än Red Hat Linux på servern
 - möjlighet att på ett enkelt sätt skapa anpassade Linuxskrivbord
   (Desktop Customizer)

Klienter kan som vanligt hämtas direkt från hemsidan. Servermjukvaran
finns tillgänglig på partnerwebben samt på
http://www.cendio.se/files/thinlinc/protected/ (kräver inloggning).

Den nya versionen kräver en ny systemlicens. Kunder med
underhållsavtal erhåller automatiskt en ny systemlicens.

En mer detaljerad beskrivning av nyheterna följer. 

* Allmänt:
    * Klienternas lokala diskenheter kan nu nås från
      terminalservrarna. Det här betyder att det nu går att nå
      klientens CD-ROM, diskettstation och andra lokala
      filsystem. Omdirigering av diskenheter fungerar med
      Windowsterminalservrar, så lokala diskenheter går att nå både
      från Linux- och Windowsapplikationer.

      Eftersom många digitalkameror kan hanteras som en
      USB-lagringsenhet så är det alltså nu möjligt att ladda ner
      bilder från en digitalkamera som är ansluten till en
      ThinLinc-klient. 

      Notera: Omdirigering av diskenheter stöds f.n. endast med
      UNIX-klienten. (Mekanismen som fanns i version 1.2 som, i
      teorin, gjorde det möjligt att nå filsystem på en Windowsklient
      genom att dela ut dem via Windows inbyggda CIFS-server stöds ej
      längre.)

* Klienten:
    * Den säkra Java-webb-klienten har förbättrats. Det är inte längre
      nödvändigt att bekräfta serverns SSH-fingeravtryck
      (fingeravtrycket verifieras istället över säker HTTP). Lösenord
      längre än 8 tecken fungerar. Tab-tangenten fungerar som
      förväntat.

    * UNIX- och Windowsklienten har språkanpassats, och innehåller nu
      både en engelsk och svensk översättning.

    * Windows 95 stöds ej längre. 

    * SunRay-terminaler kan nu användas som ThinLinc-klienter. 

* Server:
    * Ändrade plattformskrav: ThinLinc fungerar nu på andra
      distributioner än Red Hat Linux. Mjukvaran har testats på Red
      Hat Linux 7.3 och 9, Fedora Core 1 och SuSE Linux 9.0. Den ska
      fungera på de flesta Linuxdistributioner som bygger på GLIBC
      2.2.5 eller nyare, som använder RPM. För mer information, se
      dokumentationen. 

    * Ett grafisk, X11-baserat installationsprogram finns nu. Det
      gamla menybaserade gränssnittet är fortfarande tillgängligt och
      väljs automatiskt när ingen X11-miljö finns. 

    * En "virtuell" serieportsenhet tillhandahålls, som gör det
      möjligt att komma åt klientens serieportar från vanliga
      Linuxapplikationer. Det här betyder att det nu är möjligt att
      t.ex. synkronisera PDA:er som ansluts via serieport. 

    * Filåtkomst till Novell Netware-servrar via NCP-protokollet stöds
      nu. I vissa situationer så är det här en bättre lösning än att
      använda NFS.

    * Sessions-startup-skripten har omorganiserats. Det gör det mycket
      enklare att anpassa inloggningsproceduren och gör det enklare
      att aktivera kommandon som ska köras vid utloggning. (Notera:
      Programmet tl-select-profile startar inte längre sessionen.
      Detta görs numera av programmet tl-run-profile och innebär att
      anpassade startupfiler som använder tl-select-profile behöver
      uppdateras.)

    * Stödet för "närmsta skrivare" är inte längre baserat på
      LDAP. Det betyder att det inte längre är nödvändigt att
      installera och konfigurera en OpenLDAP-server.

* TLCOS (klient-operativsystem):
    * TLCOS (ThinLinc Client Operating System) är det nya namnet för
      tl-150MB. 

    * Applikationen "metapad", som är användbar för att anpassa
      Kickstart-filer, är inkluderad på TLCOS-CDn.

    * NumLock aktiveras vid uppstart av TLCOS. 

    * Installation på datorer med S3-grafikkort är nu enklare. 

    * TLCOS stödjer nu USB, vilket gör det möjligt att använda
      omdirigering av diskenheter med många USB-lagringsenheter.

* Dokumentation:
    * Dokumentationen har utökats och förbättrats. Den innehåller
      t.ex. ytterligare information om hur man använder ThinLinc mot
      Novell NDS-servrar. För att det ska bli enklare att hitta så har
      styckenumrering införts.

* Administration:
    * Programvara för enkel konfiguration av anpassade Linuxskrivbord
      medföljer nu ThinLinc. Genom att använda mallskrivbord och
      "ThinLinc Desktop Customizer" kan systemadministratören skapa
      skrivbord för olika grupper av användare, där
      skrivbordsinställningar och menyinnehåll kan styras. De
      anpassade skrivborden baseras på "K Desktop Environment".

    * Anpassning av tillgängliga profiler (sessionstyper) är nu
      enklare. 

    * Administrationsmodulen för Webmin innehåller nu en
      statistik-modul för övervakning av antalet samtidiga användare.

ThinLinc 1.3.0 is now available. The major improvements in this
version are:

 - support for accessing clients local drives from the terminal server
 - support för distributions other than Red Hat Linux on the server
 - the administrator can now easily create customized Linux desktops
   for the users (Desktop Customizer)

Clients can be downloaded from the ThinLinc web page, as usual. The
server software is available for Partners via our Partner web, and
from http://www.cendio.se/files/thinlinc/protected/ (requires login).

This new version requires a new system license. Customers with
maintenance agreements will recieve a new licens automatically.

A more detailed description of the new features follows. 

* General:

    * The clients local drives can be accessed from the terminal
      servers. This means that it is now possible to reach the clients
      CD-ROMs, floppies, and other file systems. Drive redirection
      works with Windows Terminal Servers as well, so drive access is
      possible from both Linux and Windows applications. 

      Since many digital cameras can be accessed as a USB storage
      device, downloading images from a camera attached to a ThinLinc
      thin client is now possible.

      Note: Local drive redirection is currently only supported with
      the UNIX client. (The mechanism present in version 1.2 which, in
      theory, made it possible to access file systems on a Windows
      client by sharing them using Windows built-in CIFS server is no
      longer supported.)

* Client:

    * The secure Java Browser Client has been improved. It is no
      longer necessary to confirm the server's SSH fingerprint (the
      fingerprint is verified over secure HTTP). Passwords longer than
      8 characters are now accepted. The Tab key works as expected.

    * The UNIX and Windows client has been localized, and now includes
      both english and swedish translations.

    * Windows 95 is no longer supported. 

    * SunRay terminals can now be used as ThinLinc clients. 

* Server:
    * New server platform requirements: ThinLinc is now supported on
      distributions other than Red Hat Linux. The software has been
      tested on Red Hat Linux 7.3 and 9, Fedora Core 1, and SuSE Linux
      9.0. It should work on most Linux distributions based on GLIBC
      2.2.5 or newer, which uses RPM. For more details, see the
      documentation.

    * A graphical, X11-based installation program has been added. The
      earlier menu-based interface is still available and
      automatically selected when no X11 environment is found.

    * A "virtual", per-user serial port device is now provided, which
      makes it possible to access the clients serial port from
      ordinary Linux applications. This means that it is now possible
      to synchronize PDAs which connects through a serial port, for
      example.

    * It is now possible to access Novell Netware file servers using
      the NCP protocol. In some cases, this is a better solution than
      using NFS. 

    * The session startup scripts have been reorganized. This makes it
      much easier to customize the login procedure, as well as logout
      actions. (Note: The program tl-select-profile does not start the
      session any longer. This is now done by tl-run-profile, and
      means that customized startup files that uses tl-select-profile
      needs to be updated.)

    * The nearest printer support is no longer based on LDAP. This
      means that it is no longer necessary to install and configure
      the OpenLDAP server. 

* TLCOS (client OS):

    * TLCOS (ThinLinc Client Operating System) is the new name for
      tl-150MB.

    * The application "metapad", which is useful for editing Kickstart
      configuration files, is included on the TLCOS CD. 

    * Numlock is activated automatically when TLCOS starts. 

    * Installation on computers with S3 graphic card adapters is now
      easier. 

    * TLCOS includes USB hotplug support, which makes it possible to
      use drive redirection with many USB storage devices. 

* Documentation:

    * The documentation has been expanded and improved. For example,
      it contains additional information about using ThinLinc with
      Novell NDS servers. For improved navigation, all sections now
      have a section number.

* Administration:
    * Software for easy configuration of Customized Linux Desktops is
      now included in ThinLinc. Using Template Desktops and the
      ThinLinc Desktop Customizer, the system administrator can create
      desktops for different groups of users, controlling desktop
      settings and menu entries. The Customized Desktops are based on
      the K Desktop Environment.

    * Customizing the available profiles (session types) is now
      easier. 

    * The Webmin administration module now provides statistics of the
      number of concurrent users.
