Misbehaving screen saver perhaps? It's built in to gnome-shell these 
days, so you won't see a separate process for it. You could try 
disabling the screen saver and see if the issue goes away.

PS. Please don't reply to an existing mail with a different topic. It 
makes things very confusing for people who group things by thread. :)
